The WindTrack Network
WindTrack can connect to your internet-attached weather stations
to retrieve wind related information and allow all WindTrack users
access via their cell phone/PDA. If your weather station software
can report METAR-formatted data, we can connect to your station
and add it to our sailors-only Network!
If you dont already have a weather sensor
with a weather station, the first thing to do is to find a personal
station to purchase. These range anywhere from small units that
mount to your house and connect directly to your weather station,
to fully contained solar powered cellular or UHF broadcasting systems
that can wirelessly transmit to your weather station from 40+ miles
away (or from anywhere if your in cellular range)! This
link describes some of the long-distance wireless options from
Davis
Instruments and a FAQ
regarding those options. I have provided some links if you are interested
in researching/purchasing a station/sensor to add to the WindTrack
network.
For software, there are several software
packages that allow you to publish METAR information to the internet.
I have some of those listed in the gutter to the left. It is important
to purchase or upgrade to the correct software... dont just read
the word "Internet" and assume it can publish METAR data. Once you
have the correct software, the key is to configure a web page and
publish it containing only the METAR text information within the
<body> tag. For example:
<html>
<head></head>
<body>
2004/04/19 03:54
K001 190354Z 22021G26KT 8SM VCTS -RA BKN038 OVC080 14/12 A2963 RMK
AO2 PK WND 25033/0310 WSHFT 0303 LTG DSNT ALQDS SLP030 P0034 T01390122
</body>
</html>
You then contact me on the Personal Weather Station connectivity
topic in the forums (under Support) with the URL, station name and
location, I set you up with a unique station ID (in the above example,
you are "K001"), and you've been officially added to our sailors-only
network!
I have only two requirements thereafter:
- Your software updates the page at least once an hour, 24 hours a day, everyday
- You contact me when you decide to stop participating. All too
often, personal station networks (such as weather underground,
or weatherforyou) have more than 50% dead or outdated stations
participating. This is frustrating, and I will delete any station
that has not updated its information in 1 month.
